Role Description
DEXD is seeking a Wayfinding Designer for a full-time, hybrid position based in Toronto, ON.
The Wayfinding Designer will develop and deliver clear, intuitive, and code-compliant wayfinding systems for complex built environments. The role combines spatial thinking, information design, wayfinding strategy, and detailed project delivery, translating complex environments into clear navigation systems and coordinated design documentation.
The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, designers, technologists, architects, consultants, and clients across all stages of design, from wayfinding strategy and programming through documentation and implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Develop wayfinding strategies that support intuitive navigation, destination hierarchy, circulation, and spatial clarity.
Analyze architectural plans and spatial environments to develop destination logic, messaging hierarchies, sign location plans, and placement strategies.
Develop wayfinding programming, information architecture, message schedules, and sign location plans.
Prepare diagrams, drawings, reports, presentations, schedules, and coordinated submission packages.
Develop and communicate wayfinding design concepts and design intent.
Coordinate wayfinding and signage with architectural, environmental graphic, BIM, and technical documentation.
Ensure wayfinding design intent aligns with accessibility requirements, applicable standards, and project-specific guidelines.
Participate in client and consultant meetings and communicate wayfinding strategies and design decisions clearly.
Identify spatial conflicts, coordination issues, scope changes, and potential project risks and work with the Project Manager to resolve them.
Participate in design reviews and QA/QC processes to ensure accurate, complete, and submission-ready deliverables.
Support projects through pricing, fabrication, and implementation stages as required.
Qualifications
Professional experience in wayfinding, signage, environmental graphic design, experiential graphic design, architecture, or a related field.
Strong understanding of spatial navigation, circulation, destination hierarchy, information architecture, and wayfinding principles.
Ability to interpret architectural drawings, floor plans, site plans, and other technical project information.
Experience developing wayfinding programs, message schedules, sign location plans, and coordinated design documentation.
Strong graphic and visual communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex spatial information.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and InDesign.
Experience with or familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit and working within coordinated architectural/BIM environments is an asset.
Understanding of accessibility principles and standards as they relate to signage and wayfinding.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work across multiple concurrent projects.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working with clients, architects, consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.
Degree, diploma, or equivalent professional experience in Environmental Graphic Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, or a related discipline.
Experience working on complex transportation, healthcare, civic, institutional, or other large multidisciplinary projects is considered an asset.
Details of Employment
We offer an annual salary of CAD $55,000–$75,000, commensurate with experience, along with vacation and sick days, statutory holidays, and additional benefits.
This is a full-time, hybrid position based in our Toronto office, with a preference for candidates located in the Greater Toronto Area. Applicants must be authorized to work in Canada.
